Reading about ART is to bring to our memory the extraordinary events that has happened in the beautiful and fascinanting field of human reproduction during the last two decades. Doctors Robert Edwards and Patrick Steptoe have the honor of being the innovators by creating just as geniuses can do, human conception outside of a mother: out-of-the-body lab conception and the following transferring of embryos to the uterine cavity and the following gestation in an sterile woman that until that moment had been condemned to be sterile for the rest of her life. This was a wonderful event that revolutionized the biological concepts of human reproduction. More than twenty years has passed in which we have seen many changes and new directions in the study of this two wonderful cells: the egg and the sperm: the only cells from the human body that have the inherent capacity of create a new life. a new life that until 20 years ago had been denying to find themselves and become a reality to an importnt number of until then, sterile couples. From that moment on, July 25, 1978, other assisted reproduction alternatives has surfaced in the relentless pursuit of discovering and overcoming the misteries and subtle nature of this two gamete, that still refuses to recognize themselves in their cellular, chromosomic or molecular intimacy. Even though when the embryo has been formed, sometimes refuses t implant itself in the uterus. And sometimes even when implanted, its evolution gets frustrated from becoming a normal pregnancy. In the other hand, the main cause for infertility in a woman is that she no longer produces egg, or that the man does not produce sperm or even more, that sperms are produced but gets trapped without being able to get outside. From this biological thoughts is that in very short period of time has come up to the surface other techniques like GIFT, Egg Donation, Embryo Cryopreservation, and most recently, ICSI, and with many odds in favor, egg cryopreservation. In Australia, the Melbourne University group under
the direction of doctor Ian Johnston and doctor Alan O. Trounson, made
possible the birth of their very first baby: Candice Reed in June, 1980,
second in the world with this technique.
